Companies House will have established the limited company's year end when the firm was incorporated.
The year will finish on the last day of the month in which the company was established.
For example, if the business was incorporated on March 5, 2021, the financial year will end on March 31, and the first accounts will be prepared on March 31, 2022.
End of the first year
The length of your accounting period in your first year of trade could be longer than a year.
For example, if your company was formed on March 5, 2021, and you began trading on March 5, 2022, your first year end will be March 31, 2022, with an accounting period of slightly over a year from March 5, 2021 to March 31, 2022.
While the accounts you submit with Companies House may easily cover accounting periods longer than a year, it's not the same with HMRC.
A single year of trading is allowed on a corporate tax return (known as a CT600).
As a result, for the first period of trading, two Corporation Tax returns must be lodged with HMRC:
From March 5th, 2021, through March 4th, 2022
From March 5th until March 31st, 2022
